Over 45 team win Inter-county title

Congratulations to the Cheshire O45 men’s team who won the 2024 Inter-counties event

In the first weekend of group stages, a team consisting of: Jon Davies (Wrexham), Mike Potter (Alderley Edge), Steffan Morgan (Alderley Edge), Steve Glenton (Chester Rugby) and Matt Uren (Barton) easily despatched their counterparts from over the border in Derbyshire with a 20-0 win..

At the finals weekend, the team started strongly putting Oxfordshire to the sword with Morgan, Hunter, Chapman, Finegold and Michael Tunstall (David Lloyd, Manchester) gaining a valuable 15-6 win.

Round two was against second-ranked Surrey, the team consisting of Davies, Morgan, Hunter, Chapman and Finegold securing a vital 15-7 win.

Round three and the title decider was against 4th ranked Norfolk. Their numbers 1 and 2 were no-shows leading to walkovers for Davies and Morgan. Hunter, Chapman and Finegold would settle for nothing less than victory to secure the national title and they did it in great style with a 20-2 win.

At the finals weekend, Cheshire beat a weakened Norfolk team in their first match. Davies and Morgan at 1 and 2 received walkovers, with Paul Chapman (Crewe), Jon Hunter (Neston) and Dean Finegold (David Lloyd, Cheadle) all taking straightforward wins.

Winning a national title is a huge achievement and this age group has proved on many occasions over the years that it is able to compete with and beat the very best on its day. The key component of this team was camaraderie, a top bunch of squash playing chaps!
