Farewell to Geoff Walton
This week we bid farewell to Cheshire and NW Counties squash legend Geoff Walton. He is upping sticks and moving to Oxfordshire to be closer to his family. Geoff has been involved with squash in Cheshire for 40+ years and is the current captain of the over 65 county side. He has represented England at Masters level and known to nearly everyone in the north west.
The term legend is probably an over-used one these days, but Geoff absolutely fits the bill. He’s been the NW Counties League supremo for a number of years and has thrown himself into the deep end of squash administration for multiple decades, be that at club, county, regional or national level.
Geoff is a long-time member of Brooklands Squash Club in Sale and in his final event with the club, won the Geoff Walton trophy after triumphing in their handicap tournament - taking out some extremely good squash players in the process! Amazingly, this was Geoff’s first ever tournament win at the club. He was presented with various thank yous at the event, including a fantastic caricature created by the Brooklands resident artist Charlie Hickson.
Cheshire SRA had previously presented Geoff with a mounted Cheshire squash shirt for his services to squash in the county - we all hope that his new palatial residence in Oxford has enough wall space for all these tributes!
Geoff will continue to captain the Cheshire O65s from Oxfordshire and we hope to see him regularly on the squash circuit.
